What We Do

What We Do
At Start With One Step, we provide essential items and support to single parents through a community nomination process. We offer personalized assistance on a case-by-case basis, ensuring that each family receives the help they need when they need it most. Our support includes providing appliances, providing emergency utility support right before or upon shutoff directly to the utility company, and other necessary resources to help single parents maintain their households and improve their ability to lead successful families by helping to alleviate the distraction of worry and to help them be the best version of themselves.

What We’ve Accomplished

Since our inception, Start With One Step has supported numerous single parents by providing them with the essentials they need to maintain their households and improve their quality of life allowing them to focus on what matters most - their families. Our impact is continually growing as more community members get involved. Rachel’s own journey from single mom to successful entrepreneur and nonprofit founder is a testament to how an act of kindness can place someone on a trajectory of independence, confidence, and ultimately success. We are proud of the positive change we have created in our community and remain dedicated to making a lasting impact.

How We Do It

Our community nomination process is at the heart of how we operate. Members of the community can nominate single parents who could use a boost of support. Nominations are submitted through an online form and reviewed by our board based on specific criteria to ensure shared decision-making. Our goal is to provide timely assistance, ensuring that single parents feel valued and supported within their community. We have also developed a Nomination Handbook that outlines our nomination and approval criteria, including guidelines for handling nominations involving family members or direct connections to board members to avoid conflicts of interest.
